BIOL 2903 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Hudson Bay Lowlands, Carolinian Forest, Metamorphic Rock
Document Summary
The total number of species of flora and fauna = biodiversity: biological diversity. Size ontario > 1 million km^2. Great range of abiotic factors (non living) Rocks: rocks are made of minerals that affect the nutrient supply and soil chemistry. The rock under any given area is bedrock. Some bedrock is flat and layered: these rocks are formed from sediments and are called sedimentary rocks. Limestone is a sedimentary rock: rich in calcium (calcium carbonate, soft and basic ph, some limestone is made from animals whose fossil remains are full of ca. Other rocks were formed from molten rock (magma) deep underground: they are not layered, igneous rocks usually lack calcium. Rock can be transformed by heat and pressure. A third type of rock is formed fro pre-existing rock metamorphic rock: retain the chemical characteristics of their parent rock. Granite can become gneiss which is acidic and lacks calcium.
