Organizational Behaviour Lecture 3 Notes Chapters 4 Personality in the Workplace Personality ­ Refers to peoples preferred styles and behaviour CANOE ­ Conscientiousness o Dependable, organized, reliable, ambitious, hardworking and preserving o Strongest influence on performance of the BIG 5 o Prioritize accomplishment striving:  Spend more time on task  Build job knowledge  Goal setting and persistence  Exceed work requirements o Also predicts other work/non work outcomes:  Career success, health  o  Best predictor of job success  ­ Agreeableness o Warm, kind, cooperative, sympathetic, helpful, courteous o Prioritize communion striving  Seek to gain acceptance in personal relationship o Focus on getting along, but getting ahead o Beneficial in many positions/roles but can be detrimental in others ­ Neuroticism o Opposite is Emotional Stability o Nervous, moody, emotional, insecure, jealous o Synonymous with negative affectivity:  Tendency to experience unpleasant moods such as hostility.,  nervousness and annoyance o Associated with a differential exposure to stressors:  Neurotic people more likely to appraise day­to­day situation as  stressful ­ Openness o Curious, imaginative, creative, complex, refined, sophisticated o Valuable in jobs that require high levels of creativity and spontaneity o Predictive of cross­cultural sensitivity and success ­ Extraversion o Talkative, sociable, passionate, assertive, bold. Dominant o Prioritize status striving:  A strong desire to obtain power and influence within a social  structure as a means of expressing [personality o Tend to be high in positive affectivity:  Tendency to experience pleasant, engaging moods such as  enthusiasm, excitement and elation.
