BUSI 2101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Fiedler Contingency Model
Document Summary
Power is de nes as the capacity to in uence the behaviour of others. In uence is the process by which people successfully persuade others to follow their advice, suggestions or orders. In general there are three possible outcomes to an in uence attempt commitment, compliance or resistance. Whereas commitment implies internal agreement, compliance is merely going along with a request or demand without believing it. Resistance occurs when a person"s in uence attempt is rejected. In the lateral relationships that we nd in staff positions, self-directed work teams and network organizations, power comes from expertise effort and relationships, rather than one"s position or the ability to reward or punish others (coercive power). Charisma is another source of power; it is an extension of referent power, which is based on desirable personal traits or resources.
