The processes by which we select, organize, and evaluate the stimuli in our environment to make it meaningful for ourselves. Internal: motives, values, interests, attitudes, past experiences, expectations. What your told or made to believe : helps us predict behavior, allows us to infer things, helps us know how to relate to others. Purpose of the perceiver: eg security guard at airport vs fellow traveler. Social context: bathing suit at the beach not at the office. Accessibility in our memory: most recent experiences. Arena: known to others and known to yourself: lowest chance of conflict. Blindspot: known to others but unknown to yourself: bad traits that you don"t want to realize it, higher chance of conflict, others give feedback to reduce conflict. Fa ade: unknown to others but known to self: something you are ashamed about so you put on an act so people don"t know who you are, highest chance of conflict, share with others to reduce conflict.
