R&d is taken care of by the operations manager. You need process control for product design to: Idea generation, build a business case (market and competitor analysis), development (translate the voice of the customer), testing and validation, launch. The product goes into an iterative cyclical stage to improve until the development of the product is done. It gets more expensive to go back a step as you progress along the timeline. Involving the suppliers in the design of the product to ensure the product is possible and within the supplier"s requirements. Design effects inventory as well, maybe the new product needs new inventory, etc. Competition: reverse engineering (the dismantling and inspecting of a competitor"s product to discover product improvements). In the idea generation phase, evolution and new ideas are still being produced. The new direction of the design world is towards human-centered, behaviour, and relations.
