One"s preferred way for processing, understanding, and retaining new information. While it is often said that people have different learning styles, there is reason to be skeptical. Note-taking is beneficial: forces processing of material and gives you an external record to consult afterwards. Advantages to taking notes by hand vs. laptop. Taking notes on a laptop can be distracting. Students who take notes by hand remember more than students who take notes on laptops. (mueller & oppenheimer 2014) Students who type notes on the computer are more likely to copy material verbatim. Students who write notes by hand are more likely to be more selective, and to process and summarize material as it is presented. If you"re distracted by others" use of laptops, sit near the front. (and if you are going to do potentially distracting things, please sit near the back. ) Doodling aids attention and memory (andrade 2009). Why? prevents mind from wandering/daydreaming; mild form of cognitive activity.
