Lecture 7 how cognitive science can help you get through school and learning disabilities. Learning style: one"s preferred way for processing, understanding, and retaining new information. People who have preference for encoding things in some particular format tend to learn things better when there are in that format. Note-taking is beneficial: forces processing of material and gives you an external record to consult afterwards: helps with memory and retention. Advantages to taking notes by hand vs. laptop: taking notes on a laptop can be distracting, students who take notes by hand remember more than students who take notes on laptops. (mueller & Understanding what"s being said and summarize that and often paraphrase it in your own words having to process the content for meaning. If you"re distracted by others" use of laptops, sit near the front. (and if you are going to do potentially distracting things, please sit near the back. : remove yourself from the distraction.
