Cognitive research has historically focused on "cold" cognition. However, over the past 30 years a growing number of researchers have investigated the relationship between cognition and emotion. Feeling, or affect, that can involve physiological arousal, conscious experience, and behavioural expression. Usually emotion is distinguished from mood due its episodic nature. Emotions can motivate us to perform actions. Determine behavioural reactions to events, especially social situations: Relevance detection why should we pay attention to or ignore something. Response preparation evaluate the situation so we can properly respond. Communicate internal state to others (ex. expression & tone) Sympathetic: prepares for fight or flight (ex. measuring sweat) Parasympathetic: the system that is active in regular states or to return to regular states. Schachter and singer"s 2 factor theory of emotion. General, undifferentiated physiological arousal occurs and is then interpreted based on context. Half not told true effect of drug. Results same emotion as confederate only if were not told true effects of drug.
