CGSC 1001 Lecture 13: Action and Free Will
Document Summary
Thesis of causal determinism: future events are entirely determined by past events and the laws of nature. Suppose we had a complete description of all the laws of nature (l) and a complete description of the entire state of the universe at a given point in time t1 (u). If determinism is true, then based on this we can get get a complete description of the entire state of the universe at any other point time. Let"s say this set of dominos will take 1 minute to tumble over. Incompatibilism: if determinism is true, then we do not have free will: hard determinism: determinism is true, and we do not have free will. Libertarianism: determinism is false, and we do have free will: compatibilism: even if determinism is true, we can still have free will. Why does free will matter: connection between free will and moral responsibility.
