Working memory is active during the day (ex. watching movies and lectures because you"re using multiple systems by listening and retaining) Long-term memory: more likely if it is concentrated on more. Argue that there is no capacity to long-term (a memory can last from 3 minutes to a very long time) Procedural: implicit, not consciously accessible (ex. knowing how to drive) The hippocampus appears to be important for transfer from working memory to long term memory. Cerebellum, the basal ganglia, and the motor cortex important for procedural memory. Consolidation: process of converting information from working memory to long term memory. Since a single memory may be scattered throughout the brain, when we recall something, we are recollecting those pieces. This happens during the rapid eye movement (rem) stage of sleep associated with dreaming.
