CLCV 1003 – Terms 4 140121 The Gracchi • The Gracchus brother • They were plebeian that served in the tribunes • Tried to redistribute land to the plebeians • They wanted to give land back to the plebeians so that they could qualify to serve in the army Tiberius Gracchus • Brother of Gaius • He wanted to transfer some of the riches wealth to the poor (AKA there land) • He was murdered for his ideas Gaius Gracchus • He reinstated his brothers land reforms • He gave a lot of the Latium’s Roman citizenship Gaius Marius • He formed a private army of plebeians  • The would use his army’s to supress riots • This is the first time that the roman army were turned against their own people • He was consul seven times Lucius Cornelius Sulla • Known as Sulla • He was consul twice and became dictator • He balance the power of the senate and the tribunes Optimates • “Best Man” • They were the traditionalist of the late Roman Republic • They wanted to extend the power of the Senate Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus • Known as Pompey • Advance directly to consul \ without the normal requirements • He was a part of the first triumphs • Married to Julia (Julius Caesar’s sister) Populares • “favouring the people” • People of the people’s assemblies and tribune • They were noble plebeians • They attempted to expand the citizenship outside of Rome and Ita
