• Lead pipes
o Lead poisoning will be gone into in detail after the winter break
o They used solder in antiquity that was almost always lead
o Lead is one of 2 metals that can be worked cold
o Lead makes ideal material for pipes
o After bending it pipes will have seam at top
o Sometimes folded into tear drop and solder over
o In ancient times lead pipes are almost entirely in cities
• In rural areas they use terracotta
• If water is just goig to cister or well you do’t eed lead, oly if you eed to put
water under pressure

o Unmarried women wear hair down, married wear hair in a bun (Roman)
o Made with gold thread
• Gages for drawing
o Used to make fine threads of gold
o Use large gage and the keep pushing through
o Work done in summer so as to work with hot gold

o If pottery in kiln is wet it will explode
o In rainy months of winter a pot may get moist enough to explode in a kiln
o Used mostly in summer
• Most large sculptures are cast in 5 pieces
o Hollow lost wax was not common
o Ars, feet, head all do’t i separate pieces
o Once warm pieces are pressed together they are polished to get rid of seam
• If seam is still there they put down lead and smooth out
o Corrosion comes from seam
o A lot of statues put on 2nd and 3rd stories of buildings
o A woman had 27 kids and had a statue made in her honour

• Made in likeness of Julius Caesar than Julius was killed so they buried the heads

o X-rays show where soldering lines were
