Document Summary

The iliad: the structure of withdrawal of the hero, devastation, and then the return of the hero, achilles asks for the greeks to be defeated in battle, because they do not understand that they need him. For this, he asks zeus: he wants to be wanted, when we get to book 9, agamemnon sends 3 people to convince achilles to come back. In book 11, achilles sees the wounded machaon (greek healer), and he sends patroclus to go after him. When we pick up again with patroclus, he is with achilles in his tent in book 16. Patroclus takes achilles armour, and goes to fight in his place: patroclus arrives and turns the battle. The trojans start throwing fire on the ships, and patroclus tries to assault the trojans. He is stopped by apollo and then killed by hector: there is a prophecy for achilles, that if he kills hector, he will be killed shortly after.
