Helen is the meaning of the trojan war: aeschylus describes helen in a metaphorical way, nothing about what she looks like. Tragedy: myth does something, it is not a story that is told just for entertainment. Athens in the 5th century: the persian invasions in 490 and 480. The greeks states defend against the larger persian empires. The athenians turned their defence into an expansive empire: the athenians formed an empire, and for 27 years, there is the peloponnesian war between athens and sparta. Athens comes out the winner: the athenian empire was called the delian league, there was massive commerce going over the seas, the parthenon and the propylaea were built during this time. In the parthenon is a sculpture of athena.
