Document Summary

Thebes in the old kingdom was simply a provincial capital but is elevated to a major city under the rule of mentuhotep i. He also starts the practice of burials for wives together (saff tombs, buried in picking order). Diplomatic wives had to be servants of the principle wife, she also has the power of veto over the diplomatic wives. In order: kersit -> kemsit -> kawit -> ashayt. Through the middle kingdom we see changes in the art (see the slides on kemsit) we see that the servants of kawit for example wore the same sort of bands. Kawit is the principle wife because she is shown drinking fresh milk which means that she is likely the head priestess of ra (she is the wife of ra by title). Ashayat is depicted wearing ankle bracelets (which means non-egyptian /inferior people group) and she is clearly shown with distinct nubian features. She is shown smelling a lotus (flower of immortality).
