Sparta and her allies constitute over half of the troops sent out to fight the persians while the majority of greeks decide to medise and succumb to the persians. Athens would have been on their own had sparta not joined the fight. Spartans were the commanders in battles both naval and land battles, therefore the rights to claim the victory goes to sparta rather than athens. The spartans would consult the generals and see what the best advice is, this is remarkably modern for their approach to leadership. The persian wars are thus thought of as the greatest period for sparta, this is of course costly for sparta but they do come out as the leaders of the greek world and not just the peloponnesian league. Themes in the 5th and 4th century bce. The classical period is dated sometime during the persian wars either before or after ending the time of the birth of alexander.
