We still see that the spartans are an amateur militia army rather than a professional army, we see the same types of troops, it is still an aristocratic formation since the armour needed to be provided by the individual. What happens after the deeper phalanx (479 - 323 bce) is that we see a separation in the types of troops that have different abilities and different uses in the battle field . Therefore it no longer becomes as expensive to serve as a hoplite and everything else begins to change, this opened up the post to more people and the advantage of the uniform phalanx in depth. Now that we have a deeper phalanx we can have more time in combat without losing heavy infantry (how much attrition can the army take). The secret to the battle is lasting longer than the other army. The spartan army is the leader in the development of warfare in the greek world.
