Audience commodity: advertisers influence content, media producers may be pressured to avoid innovation, creativity, controversy, etc. Homogeneity becomes the norm: form of social control, greater number of voices is better for democracy and for health and when that number shrinks, it"s a cause for concern. Ex: representing women is hard because there are women of all ages, sizes, ethnicities, sexual orientations, etc. Orson welles: actor, director, filmmaker (prodigy, citizen kane + war of the worlds = most known contributions to media. When they have heightened emotional insecurity and vulnerability, they panic at any perceived threat and make impulsive decisions and highly susceptible to suggestion. Listening situation: fear and other powerful negative emotions were contagious, submissive listeners looked to opinion leaders and authorities for how to interpret media, people feel more vulnerable when separated from their loved ones. Support networks directly affected how listeners responded to medias.
