Pliny the Elder is one of the major writers from antiquity. Because everything interested
him, his Natural history (HN) is very much a combination of an encyclopedia and also a
kind of Guiness book of world records. He is not just interested in a class of object but
within that (such as, e.g., statues of Amazons, honey, wines) he ranks them from best to
worst.
Like all ancient (and for that matter, modern) authors, he can be only as good as
his source, so if he chooses to follow an unreliable authority then his account is not to be
trusted. So, too, one has to be careful which writers were basing their accounts on
personal observation or experience.
