Violating social norms to convince people violation of the norms is the norm. 3 people hired by the filming company enter an elevator with a test subject. The three people face the back of the elevator, and slowly, the test subject does the same because everyone else is doing it. He thinks that as a species, most of us learn to talk in ways that are not solely strategic or manipulative, but communicative through various mediums. In a feudal society, public communication was through spectacle. Since the printing press, people are equal because of liberal and mass democracy. In a communicatively rational society, people are able to relate critically to information. Industries pose a challenge because the nature of persuasion is not always critical or rational. Persuasion industries insist habermas" concept is over-idealized and instead pose the question how does the human mind work? to approach people realistically with techniques of appeal.
