The study of what today is discourse analysis was dominated by rhetorical analysis. Rhetoric began in athens in conjunction with the rise of democracy. Depended on oratory or the ability to persuade through words. After its creation, rhetoric was carried on to the point where it provided a foundation. The rhetor is a phronimos who uses practical reasoning to reach sound political judgments and prudent conduct. The problem with rhetoric"s origin story is that aristotle actually did not like democracy, equated it with rule by lowly workers. The character of a speaker as a fictional construction, vantage point, or persona which the author seeks to establish so as to be respected and believed. Persuasion based on manipulating the audience"s emotions or frame of mind through elements of style. The actual argument or proof offered for a position.
