Held together by one substantive concern: crime. It is multidisciplinary so it is important to understand the conceptual apparatus with which a criminologist might be working. Criminologists disagree with each others over how to solve" the crime problem. Often resonates with common sense thinking about crime but often challenges that thinking. All these features need to be situated within societies increasingly preoccupied with crime, risk and insecurity. Media is a prominent source of shaping our knowledge and opinions around crime. Media studies are a prominent sub discipline with criminology. What we understand about worlds of crime if learned experience we get through media, so it is the disconnect we see. These representations are often distorted compared to what actually happens in the real world- miseducating us a bit. Never been more crime coverage in media, but crime rate has been slowing declining. Friction because we see more crime reported, but in fact less is happening.
