Lecture 1
Defining criminology
• Sutherland and cressey
• Body of knowledge/ crime – social phenomenon
• Creating laws, law – breaking and reactions to them
o Some people do not have the right state of mind to realize that they are
committing a crime.
o Young people are also not always aware that the act they are doing is
committing a crime (In Canada age 12-17. In the UK starts at age 10)
o To be in a federal prison you must be serving anything over 2 years in jail.
Why and where is the value in researching crime?
• In order to better prevent crimes, we reduce recidivism
• Helps Medical scientists develop cures for those who are mentally unstable.
Most common type of crime in Canada?
• Property related offences
Media and Crime
• Public perception
• CSI effect (not exactly accurate. Not as efficient as displayed)
• Critique

• Definition of crime and criminals
o Not all acts are criminal, in the past we can look at homosexual activity. Texting
