CRCJ 3001 Lecture 6: CRCJ3001 Week 3.2 Lecture Note
Document Summary
Selecting participants: idea, form hypothesis, define variables and identify measurement strategy, participant selection strategy & ethics plan, select research strategy, select research design, conduct study, evaluate data, report results. Sample vs. population: population: all individuals of interest, sample: smaller set of people who actually participate in the study, relationship resembles a circle. Representativeness: goal: to generalize results from sample to entire population, avoid selection bias, accessible population has unique characteristics, ex. jury on gerald stanley (accused of killing an indigenous man) case was all white. Sample size: how big should the sample be, short answer: it depends, some broad conventions exist, 25, 30, or 50 per group. In general: the bigger the better: but, can become ethical question. Law of large numbers: average distance btwn sample & population decreases as sample increases. 2 basic sampling procedures: probability, odds of selecting certain person known, non-probability, odds of selecting certain person unknown.
