* who and what are we trying to protect through criminalizing vice crimes. Bill c-150 pierre trudeau passed a bill to prevent criminalizing consensual acts in the bedroom. Contested private / public spaces where acts of indecency occur. Laud humphrey"s (1970) the tearoom trade: impersonal sex in public places. Tearooms: public bathrooms that are frequently used by men for impersonal & anonymous sexual encounters (mostly oral sex) with other men. Studied how police responded to the activities in public restrooms. Argues that in the past years police have invoked the crime control model of enforcement. Police used intrusive surveillance techniques: frequent stings set up, putting cameras in bathrooms etc. Given the minimal harms of the offence vs. the harms of criminalization less intrusive responses are recommended. Prostitution = exchange of sex for money and other things of value: example: meals, housing, drugs, clothes, jewellery, etc. Prostitute invokes intense social stigma and therefore can reinforce discrimination.
