Coming of age (doesn"t work as its own genre, more of a theme): jo. Domestic tale - con ict is not literal, they are internal: tom. Characterization: the way the characters are put together. Unique, round, dynamic characters: capable of psychological and moral growth; characters are individual. Tom sawyer was the rst project that wasn"t commissioned. It was going to be 4 volumes from di erent parts of tom"s life, he only wrote the rst. Tom: based on a group of boys that twain admired as a child. The setting: a place that he admired as a child. Twain had to ght for the book to be marketed for children instead of for adults. The expectation of an adventure is that you won"t su er an injury from the physical danger. There is an element of escapism, it is recreational. Character needs to be a risk taker, is courageous, the risks are posed by another character.
