Much of her writing inspiration comes from nature- when she"s out for a walk, etc. The flash - flash of inspiration, foundation of her creativity, but it isolates her from people she"s closest to. Artistic creation is solitary- artist as solitary figure. Emily is becoming part of a community and learning how to fit in yet she feels her artistic vision seals her off from others. Confrontation between emily and relatives who rejected her mother and her- underdog confrontation. Confrontation between small, poor, outcast girl and members of very proud and hostile family. You"re not of much importance - i"m important to myself - emily stands up for herself. The family is religious, they are presbyterian- form of protestantism, church of scotland. Low on social order but consistently insists on own worth.
