Wish for regression to infancy with other mother- finds it frightening and disturbing though. Has 2 mothers- real and other mother. Comparison of two different styles of mothering. Real mother- contemporary feminist- has career, won"t subordinate identity to being a mother. Feels both her parents are neglecting her. Other mother seems to provide attention coraline wants, but turns out to be a monstrous person trying to prevent her from developing. Book can be seen as feminist message, but figure of other mother complicates this- part of what makes her evil is that she has power, other father turns out to be reduced to monster in the basement. Represents powerful woman as being monstrous and dangerous. Other mother like satan- tries to be a creator, but can only twist and distort things that already exist.
