Immerses us in thoughts of yvonne- she has returned to mexico after some time away, ex-wife of consul (calls him geoff), has returned to. Mexico in hope of beginning new life with the consul. Immerses us in thoughts of consul, geoffrey firmin. He is an ex consul- retired from official post.
