Variety of types that are typically customized to suit specific application. Hvac equipment usually takes up to 4-9% of gba (gross building area) Core zones have relatively constant thermal loads. Perimeter zones can have highly-variable thermal loads because of their exposure to the outdoors. It is possible to have simultaneous heating and cooling needs (but it is very inefficient) Heating equipment is generally given as a % efficiency (ratio of thermal energy output to energy input) Cooling equipment and heat pumps are given a cop. Normally, the plant equipment has a non-constant efficiency and is given a part-load efficiency curve. Coefficient of performance (cop) indicates the ratio of thermal energy output to electrical energy input. It"s like efficiency, but efficiency is < 1. Cop heating is higher than cop cooling. Normally, equipment operates at a lower efficiency if it is at a part load (i. e. not 100% capacity)
