The image of three-year old alan kurdi, drowned, lying face-down on a beach in the mediterranean sea, made headlines around the world in september, 2015. He and his family were syrian refugees of kurdish origin trying to reach europe. Photographs of his body were taken by a turkish journalist and quickly spread around the world. The kurdi family boarded a boat in bodrum, turkey (where they had moved to from syria to escape the war), the family were trying to move to the greek island of kos. The boat was made of plastic/rubber and was inflatable, it capsized 5 minutes into its journey, the passengers had life vests, but they were repo(cid:396)tedl(cid:455) i(cid:374)effe(cid:272)ti(cid:448)e o(cid:396) (cid:858)fake(cid:859) It was reported on syrian radio that the kurdi family paid over for their four spaces on the boat. Alan, his brother, their mother and 10 other syrian migrants drowned. Recall the reading by richard shapcott at the beginning of the course.
