King promised to take care of him. King hands over stone or dirt to symbolize giving land. Children important because they were around longer to testify. Might be given a gift, hit them so they remember, give them a bath (baths not common) Banded together with other lord to protect their rights. Granted large amounts of land to their followers. King sought to control lands by appointing royal representatives.
