Romans and barbarians attracted to the idea of works. Barbarians wanted to be involved in rome. Did not get along sometimes, military tactics too much for barbarians. Romans attacked by barbarians in 378 ad. Romans slow to respond, but had begun to use heavy armour and charge the enemy with horses and lances. Roman empire in the west unsafe, poor, no administration, declining agriculture, cities in decay, move from urban to rural > moving backwards in time, rome abandoned. Spread: legacy to greece and rome, legacy to judaism and christianity, german"s own cultural traditions. Traveled in search of agriculture and plunder. Similar to american indian tribes: chief had to be a strong leader for his community and war, lead by consensus, not a hereditary ruler. Status depended on guarding self from insult or humiliation. Honour and reputation is everything > courage, loyalty, strength, fighting, never accepting insult.
