Lack of good land meant small cities, little surplus. Agricultural produced by free farmers who owned their own land and were responsible for the city"s. The individual was important, had more power and say than in ancient societies. Free men had a political role to play defence. Fought in a different way, reflected the nature of society and importance of the individual. Iron age warrior > iron tipped spear, iron sword, bronze armour on legs, torso, head > panoply. Had to be strong, wooden shield, heave armour. Free man, could afford a kit for battle. All men desperate to serve, marker of citizenship.
