All the provinces who join confederation want a country that is somehow linked, this does not happen right away. 1878 the national policy is set in by conservatives, which had a bit of fallout, it didn"t bring the nation together as it was supposed. Many tensions (french vs english, metis vs government, provincial vs federal) 1904 makes a speech that says he wants to see the country prosper. In 1896 liberals take over and national fortunes change. People do not migrate to u. s as much. Minister of interior introduces advertising campaign to promote immigration. This allows ethnic coherence since different nationalities stay together. West is an agricultural gold mine, but people had a hard time farming at first. Wheat becomes important and is sold across the world. Climate on prairies becomes more wet which helps. Construction of more railroads (grand trunk system and canadian northern) In 1905 two provinces, alberta and saskatchewan are created.
