On international women"s day, may 8, 1917, perhaps 90,000 women marched through. More than 150,000 protested the next day. By may 10, petrograd was shut down. Police and soldiers mutinied and joined the protesters. At the front, nicholas ii initially did not take protests seriously. Clashes with police ended with a mutiny of the guards who refused to fire on strikers and turned on own officers. On march 10th, the duma dissolved and government ceased. Tsar was intercepted on the way to petrograd and forced to abdicate on march 15. Initially he wanted to hand the throne to his son alex but the young hemophiliac heir, without his parents around to tend to him he would probably die because he was quite ill. His brother, mikhail, was named successor but he refused abnegate to his brother mikhail he said noway, he was exiled and lived as a russian noble.
