Karl jaspers, german psychologist invented this name for this time period - taught from around 800-200. Easy way to remember the approximate time period - around 500 bce. Religious shift - from materialism to spiritualism. All around the world in this time period (around 500 bce) many new religions were created: buddhism etc. The spread to the east across the indo-gangetic plains. They went from being nomadic cattle rustlers to agriculturists. Material and economic shift possibly influences the ideas of the culture. Karl marx - material conditions are the base for consciousness and new ideas. Vedanta sutra - summarizes all of the unpanisads.
