JOUR 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Digital Revolution, Neil Postman
Document Summary
The new medium of communication is in fact a metamedium- digital, interactive, multimedia - delivered by switched networks, the most visible current application of which is the internet. Information, through the application of intelligence and experience, produces knowledge. Neil postman who"s a social critic argues that the uncontrolled growth of communication technology destroys the vital sourced of our humanity. It creates a culture without a moral foundation. Postman proposes that all subjects be taught as history, as to give context and meaning to information, as opposed to passing it on to students as mere consumer product. Teaching one about their roots is not just to teach them where they came from but also as a means of teaching them where their ideas come from and why they happen to believe them. There"s no question that technology, and science too, are socially constructed to some extent.
