Difference between natural law and morality (the main characteristic of natural law is the belief that law comes from an outside force, separate from humanity) The social contract the people are free and they have rights, but they must give away a part of their freedom (i. e. violence) to the state and, in return, the people will be safe from violence against them. Thus, the state possesses the power of legal violence according to the social contract. If there were to be complete freedom, then society would be in a constant state of nature. Do not confuse the state with society. The state is the primary means by which the people represent themselves (in a democracy)
