Functions essentially the same: that modern legal systems do. Settle disputes - orderly mechanism for the dispute to be settled. Check deviance - has ways to control what people are doing and manage their relations. Regularize exchanges - standerad and expected for people to take part in exchanges of goods/ services. No well developed sub-political system(s) - law is not discrete. No formalized line between social control and law. Although some distinctions are possible, often con ation of substantive (what is being regulated?) and procedural laws (how its being regulated?) Advanced agrarian and early industrial systems: economic, educational and political systems increasingly differentiated from kinship - some sort of patriarchy. Re ected by increase social complexity - increase in pop and agriculture demand. Private and public laws become distinct- different sorts of laws how leadership reacts with certain people and how people interact with other people. Criminal versus torts laws also becomes distinct -
