Process of social control: internalization of group norms. We obey because we believe it is right, not because it"s a law: control through external pressure. Once group norms are broke we must decide either to sanction or not. Works best in small societies with constant contact between citizens. Not enforced formally, instead we use ridicule, gossip, praise, ostracism. Aimed at situations such as modes of cress, incest, modern technology (cyber bullying) Enforced by authorized bodies such as police, lawyers and courts. We can see formal social control within the criminal code. Legalization: process by which norms are moved from social to legal levels. This occurs when the definition of crime changes. We do so by voting for delegated political parties and judges. Q: what is the purpose of punishment/deterrence: retribution= evening the score , incapacitation= isolation, individual and general deterrence, rehabilitation= try and help them become a better member of society.
