LAWS 3904 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Burglary, Victimisation, Nils Christie
Document Summary
Research reveals that social unequal groups, including women, minority groups and the elderly are more likely to experience both forms of victimization. Victimization is the event that a victim goes through. Primary victims are those that experience victimization directly, through some type of attack. Secondary victims are those who are in some way observers of immediate traumatic effect on primary victims (i. e. eye witnesses, rescuers), they are effected in some way due to witnessing this victimization. Tertiary victims include those removed from the critical event but are impacted through encountering a primary or secondary victim (i. e. immediate neighbors, community members, former victims) Also known as revictimization: being victimized at least twice. Unequal social groups are particularly susceptible to repeat victimization. Some firms experience a disproportionate amount of crime. Maguire and bennett (1990) burglary: found that 83% of the people that experienced burglary, experienced strong reactions once they discovered burglary in the home.
