LING 3007 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Homorganic Consonant, English Plurals, Sibilant
Document Summary
There are two competing hypotheses to explain stem alternation in luganda. While both can be explained, ultimately the correct answer comes down to what is cognitively realistic and more parsimonious. The first, and likely hypothesis for luganda stem alternation predicts nasal place assimilation. This follows the prefix rule for luganda where the indefinite article n- assimilates to the place of the consonant it precedes. It is also a common occurrence in many languages. According to this hypothesis, the rule for stem alternation is as follows: The second, unlikely hypothesis, theorizes denasalization and disassimilation of the forms that alternate instead. In this case, each stem in that class would require two alternates, adding a very large number of forms to the language. Assignments 2. 1-2. 13 (not 2. 3) + what we do today, due monday.
