Document Summary

From tin pan alley to top of the pops: Tpa: emerged in the late 19th century in nyc (w28th st. between 5th and 6th avenues) Names for the noisy activity of song pluggers: ppl trying to sell their songs, so many it sounded like ppl banging on tin pots. Industry was based upon publishing, publishing rights and sheet music sales. Made no age distinctions parents and youth listened to the same music. Youth culture is an invention of developments in 20th c. mass culture. Listened to after the ball by chas k. harris from 1892: first one million seller tpa hit, sung by george j. gaskin. Thin, belting, all about projection, nasal: partly stylistic and partly due to technology/necessity. Will see the 32 bar aaba song structure in this era. Music is very deeply eurocentric and middle class. Tpa: anglo-american and euro-centric in orientation (musical style, lyric content, structural organisation, modes of dissemination)
