MUSI 1000 Lecture 18: DONE Chapter 18 - Romanticism
Document Summary
1809-1814: gradually ceased performing as pianist, people had to raise their voice. Could occasionally understand loud speech until death. Gave him freedom to experiment with new forms. Written in vienna suburb or heiligenstadt in 1802. Part last will and testament, part artistic manifesto. Beethoven reflects on ramifications of his growing deafness. Embarrassment caused him to withdraw completely from society. One of only two piano sonatas he titled. Requires more technical skill than any previous piano sonata. Frequently performed sonata in homes and palaces of viennes aristocracy. Four movements convey a sense of psychological progression. Organicism in music: cmall cells (motives) inform the entire work. Third and fourth movement linked with a bridge. Formal rules not immaterial to passionate self expression. Lamp (expressive or productive imagination: chromatic harmony for emotional intensity, chromatic notes add colour, dissonance creates anguish and drive to resolution. Melody: broad, often long and irregular, lyrical, expressive, often build to climax.
