Rhythm = the organization of time in music. Divides long spans of time into smaller units. Gives a shape, or profile to the melody. Provide vitality and definition to the melody. Beat = an even pulse of time dividing the passing of time into equal segments. Often creates physical response (tapping foot or clapping) Metre = the gathering of beats into regular groups. Group of beats is called a measure: Measures generally consist of groups of two, three or four. Measures of five or more beats are less common. Standards meters are duple, triple and quadruple. Time signature = a numerical symbol indicating the metre. Bottom note: what note value gets the beat. Top number: how many beats per bar. Greater emphasis than other beats in bar. Indicated by an upward motion of the conductor"s hand. Upbeat that comes prior to composition"s first downbeat. Displacing natural accent from a strong beat to a weak beat or between beats.
