The most important composer of the fourteenth century. Composed sacred music as well as secular songs (monophonic and polyphonic) Machaut composed the work in reims around 1360. Could be performed for any mass in honour of the virgin mary. First known setting of the mass ordinary as one unified composition. All movements composed in 4 voice polyphony. A descending scale motive unifies all the movements. Wrote vernacular poetry (generally about love) and set the lyrics to music. Because the music is not written down, very little survives.
