Has three characters (father, child, and elfking) There is no clear sense of what is going on. The perception of art changes in the romantic era. Erlking sings a seductive line to entice the boy. The terrified boy sings in the upper range with chromatic inflections. Women systematically were held out of jobs and performances for various reasons. Love oriented text is much more typical of the romantic period than the bizarre imagery of the schubert piece. The piece is not out of line with what we hear in pop songs and broadway songs. Absolute music = music that exists without the aid of any extra musical association, such as a story, plot, artwork etc. Woodwinds: new fingering mechanisms developed that made instruments easier to play. Woodwind flute replaced by a silver instrument. Brasses: orchestra now includes full brass section. Valves added to the french horn and trumpet. The conductor: an enlarged ensemble required someone to coordinate the combined effort.
