Lecture 3: rock: bill haley came before elvis. Single that made listeners not know if elvis was white or black: country + r&b + pop. Chuck berry: more country, rockabilly fusion on country and r&b. People believed rock was some force to change the world and pop was sellout. Elvis had both rock and pop and many styles. Sometimes referred to as the in-between years: other styles came to the forefront as rock 1st wave ended and the 2nd was starting. Independent radio stations were squeezed out by top-40 stations: around 1958, early r&r figures dropped out of the public eye, the payola hearings. Djs were taking bribes to play songs: teen idols: attempt to substitute rock.
