Midterm: there will be a few written questions on rst 5 lectures. Cell in striate cortex respond to certain spacial elds. Cell response depends on angle (orientation) of light. Core region either excites or inhibits, and the surrounding region does the opposite. Bar in middle region = increased ring. Bar on the outside region = decreased ring. Increased ring wherever the bar is in the region. Responds to orientation of the bar (not region) Direction selectivity - only responds to speci c directions of movement (which way the bar of light is moving) Through each level of the cortex: the bars are in the same orientation. Across the same level of the cortex: bars are in different orientations. Dominance shifts between left and right eye. * don"t need to know the speci c layers in parallel processing in primary visual cortex (slide 15) Visual processing - complex, everything is connected to everything in the brain.
